Faith Is Not Blind
The Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture
is an organization committed to showing through science that nature and humanity are a result of intelligent design, not by the random chance of natural selection. I have become a fan of Dr. Stephen Meyer, his sharp intellect, gentleness, and patient demeanor when debating others who don’t share his views on Intelligent Design.
It is important that we as Christians follow his example. The quest of the Discovery Institute is focused on science not faith and I used to wonder if that was helpful to fulfill our mandate to give a reason for the hope that lies within us with gentleness and respect. I have come to understand that it is very important to those who have blindly accepted Darwinian evolution, without any opposing view. I have also come to understand that the naturalistic view of the world is based on faith, because the science is not only not settled, but heavily favors intelligent design. If you are like me a layman without any formal scientific or philosophical training, you may think that sharing your faith with those who are intellectually well versed in their naturalistic views would be difficult. I would offer a few facts, and suggestions in a specific order of importance.
- We serve the God who spoke and universe came into existence, and we in and of ourselves can’t change people’s hearts. It is our calling to show love to all, and to show Christ in our lives by our actions. You can just plant a seed and leave God to water it.
- Building sincere long term relationships with others who don’t share our views can make a huge impact.
- We can pray for others.
- There are plenty of resources like The Discovery Institute, and Ravi Zacharias International Ministries where we can find tremendous resources.
In addition to the above suggestions I often revert to basic examination of science that we can all understand. Scientists can only make discoveries due to the existence of natural laws which provide an orderly set of constants that allow them to discover. There is no science that adequately explains the order and how it came about which allows the effective investigation of any science. I also make light of the simple fact that time, space and matter are something and can never arrive from nothing. Atheists like to turn this around on us and ask how God began. The simple answer is that if God created matter, space, and time he must exist outside of it, which points directly at an infinite creator.
If we are to be prepared to give a reason, then our faith can’t be blind. I would ask that if you are a Christian that you take a moment and write down or at least ponder deeply why you believe. Prepare yourselves to tell others how you know that God exists, and loves you.
