WHO IS JESUS THE GOD?
Should Christians view Jesus as God? If you ask this question to most people in our culture the answer would most likely be no. So who is Jesus? There are different groups of people that have different beliefs on who Jesus is. Some people say He was a man or others say he was the Messiah or Muslims say he was a great prophet. The Jehovah Witness will say he was the ark angel Michael and the Hindu or New Ager will say he was a good teacher or a guru.
So why do Christians believe that Jesus is God?
There are 5 points of evidence for the deity of Christ.
1. Jesus is addressed by his disciples as God.
2. Jesus does the activities of God.
3. Jesus is worshipped as God.
4. Jesus has the aliases of God.
5. Jesus is given the attributes that only God poses.
People will argue Jesus being God because he never came right out and said it. If we look at scripture it is clear to see that Jesus portrays himself as God.
“I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.””
John 8:24 NIV
“The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?” “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.” At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!””
John 8:48-58 NIV
When you look at the Old Testament in Exodus where Moses encountered the burning bush God uses the same words as Jesus used in the New Testament to describe himself “I Am.”
“God said to Moses, “ I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘ I am has sent me to you.’ ””
Exodus 3:14 NIV
You also see the same words used in Isaiah.
““You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.”
Isaiah 43:10 NIV
When you look at different verses throughout the New Testament about Jesus it shows he portrays himself as God:
I Am the first and the last
Your sins are forgiven
I and the Father are one
Pray in my name
Honor me as you honor the Father
Let all the angels worship him
A C.S. Lewis famous quote from his book Mere Christianity says Jesus was mad, bad or God.
“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
We know he wasn’t a bad man. He taught the highest standard of ethics. He told people to love their enemies as themselves. He says in John 8 “Can any of you prove me guilty of sin?” But they couldn’t.
We know he wasn’t mad. He gave some of the most profound teaching ever recorded. The Chief Priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest Jesus and they came back empty handed. Why? They said “No one ever spoke like this man.”
So if he wasn’t bad and he wasn’t mad, that only leaves one option: Jesus is God. It’s that belief alone that saves people like you I from dying in our sins.
Proclaiming Jesus is just a man is not sufficient for saving faith. Proclaiming that Jesus is just the Messiah is not sufficient for saving faith. Proclaiming that Jesus is a great moral teacher or a prophet is not sufficient for saving faith. Jesus tells us what is sufficient for saving faith “For unless you believe that I Am He you will die in your sins.”
